Key takeaways
- Hiding a token in Phantom only removes it from the wallet's list; the token account stays on chain and keeps its 0.00148844 to 0.00203928 SOL rent deposit.
- Phantom's help center documents a Burn Token option for Solana collectibles under More, which permanently destroys the NFT and returns its rent to the wallet.
- Phantom automatically hides tokens and collectibles that its spam detection flags, and some filtered tokens are removed from view entirely and cannot be unhidden.
- Disconnecting an app in Phantom's Connected Apps settings stops it from reading the wallet but does not revoke token approvals; Phantom points users to a separate revoke tool.
- Natively staked SOL in Phantom stays in a stake account after unstaking until the owner taps Withdraw Stake on the inactive account, which closes it and returns the SOL.
The short answer#
To clean up a Phantom wallet, hide or report spam from Manage Tokens and Manage Collectibles, burn unwanted Solana collectibles with More and then Burn Token, and withdraw any inactive stake. Hiding is cosmetic: every empty token account still holds 0.00148844 to 0.00203928 SOL of rent. At the time of writing, in October 2026, Phantom documents no close option for those accounts, so recovering that SOL takes the CLI or a closing tool.
What does "cleaning up" a Phantom wallet actually mean?#
It means two different jobs that Phantom treats separately: tidying what you see, and recovering what is locked on chain. Phantom is a very good display layer. It hides spam, filters out sold tokens and groups collectibles. None of that changes the accounts Solana stores for you, and those accounts are where the SOL is.
| What you want | Phantom feature | Changes the chain? | Returns SOL? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stop seeing a token | Manage Tokens, toggle off | No | No |
| Stop seeing a collectible | Manage Collectibles, or long-press and Hide Collection on mobile | No | No |
| Flag a scam token | More, Report as Spam | No | No |
| Get rid of an NFT for good | More, Burn Token | Yes, permanent | Yes, its rent |
| Get SOL back from empty token accounts | Not documented in Phantom | Yes | 0.00148844 to 0.00203928 SOL each |
| Get staked SOL back | Native Stakes, Unstake, then Withdraw Stake | Yes | Yes, the full stake |
| Cut an app's access | Settings, Connected Apps, Disconnect | No | No |
The steps below follow Phantom's help center at the time of writing. Phantom updates its menus regularly, so if a label has moved, look in the same item's three-dot or More menu.
How do you hide tokens and collectibles in Phantom?#
Hide a token from the Manage Tokens list. Phantom's documented steps:
- On the Home tab, open Tokens.
- In the browser extension, click the three-dot icon in the upper right and then Manage Tokens. On mobile, tap the sliders icon.
- Toggle off every token you do not want to see. Toggling it back on restores it.
Collectibles work the same way through Collectibles and Manage Collectibles, and on mobile you can also press and hold a collectible and choose Hide Collection. Phantom's help center is explicit that restoring a hidden item "only makes it visible in your wallet. It does not mean the token is safe or verified."
Hiding is the right tool for compressed spam NFTs. They are entries in a shared tree, hold no rent, and return nothing if burned, which I cover in what to do with spam NFTs on Solana.
How does Phantom's spam filter work?#
Phantom hides tokens and collectibles that look like spam automatically. Its help center says it uses internal systems and third-party security providers, looking at metadata, suspicious names or logos and risk patterns, and does not publish the exact criteria so scammers cannot game them. A flagged token can show a warning, move to the hidden list, or be removed from view entirely; Phantom says fully filtered tokens cannot be unhidden.
For anything that gets through, report it:
- Extension: open the token, then More and Report as Spam.
- Mobile: open the token, tap View, then the three-dot button and Report.
- Collectibles: open it, then More and Report as Spam.
Reporting hides the item and feeds Phantom's detection. It does not remove the token account or its rent. And whatever you do, do not follow the link in a spam token's name or image; that link is the actual attack.
How do you burn unwanted NFTs in Phantom?#
Phantom burns Solana collectibles from the item's own menu, and the rent comes back to you. The documented steps are the same on mobile and the extension:
- On the Home tab, open Collectibles and select the item.
- Choose More, then Burn Token, and confirm.
- Approve with Burn.
Burning is irreversible, so check you have the right item. Phantom's help article notes that Magic Eden verified collectibles and collectibles on Ethereum and Polygon cannot be burned there. A standard Metaplex NFT usually returns between 0.0045 and 0.01 SOL when burned, because its metadata and edition accounts close along with the token account.
For one or two items, Phantom's menu is all you need. With a gallery of junk, it is one confirmation each. The NFT Burner lists only NFTs that return rent, shows the amount per item, burns several per transaction, and charges 5% of the SOL reclaimed.
Can Phantom close empty token accounts?#
Not that Phantom documents, at the time of writing. When you sell all of a token, Phantom drops it from your list, but the empty token account remains on Solana holding its deposit: 0.00148844 SOL if it was opened after Solana lowered rent, 0.00203928 SOL if before. A wallet that has swapped a hundred memecoins can have a hundred of these, roughly 0.15 to 0.2 SOL, and Phantom shows none of them.
There are three ways to get that SOL back while keeping Phantom as your wallet:
- The
spl-tokenCLI, usingspl-token gc --close-empty-associated-accounts. Free beyond network fees, but it needs your key in a keypair file, which most Phantom users do not have and should not create casually. - Import the same address into a wallet with a close option. Some wallets offer one per token. It is free, but slow for dozens of accounts and means putting your recovery phrase into a second app.
- Connect Phantom to a closing tool. Phantom signs; the tool finds the accounts and batches them.
I built the SOLTidy Token Account Closer for the third route. You connect Phantom, it scans SPL Token and Token-2022 accounts, preselects only empty ones, and you approve a handful of transactions of up to 12 accounts each. It charges 5% of the SOL recovered, inside the same transaction. It also withdraws the excess rent from older accounts you are keeping, 0.00055084 SOL per SPL token account, and closes pump.fun volume accumulator accounts if you have traded there. Other services charge between about 1% and 15%; they are compared in ways to reclaim Solana rent.
Tokens with a tiny leftover balance cannot be closed until the balance is gone. If the token still has a market, Sell Dust for SOL swaps it through Jupiter and closes the account in one transaction.
Before approving anything, read Phantom's transaction preview. Phantom simulates transactions and shows the expected balance changes. A cleanup should show SOL arriving and nothing leaving except anything you chose to burn. If Phantom shows "This dApp could be malicious", it could not simulate the transaction, and its help center advises proceeding only if you fully trust the app.
Where else can SOL hide in a Phantom wallet?#
Two places beyond token accounts are common, and Phantom shows both if you know where to look.
Inactive native stake. Unstaking in Phantom does not return SOL to your balance. Per Phantom's help center, open Solana from your token list, go to Native Stakes, select the stake account, and tap Unstake. After the account turns from Deactivating to Inactive, usually within 2 to 3 days, select it again and choose Withdraw Stake. Phantom then closes the stake account and returns the SOL. If you staked from another app or have stake accounts Phantom groups oddly, the Stake Account Manager finds every stake account for an address. Lookups there are free and a withdrawal costs 0.002 SOL, so withdraw in Phantom whenever Phantom shows the account.
Wrapped SOL. Leftover wSOL sits in a token account and is not counted in your SOL balance. Closing that account returns both the wrapped balance and the rent.
The full checklist, including fees and failed transactions, is in why your Solana balance is lower than expected.
How do you clean up app connections and approvals?#
Disconnect apps you no longer use, and separately revoke approvals, because they are not the same thing. In Phantom, open your profile avatar in the upper left, then Settings and Connected Apps, select an app and choose Disconnect; the three-dot menu there offers disconnect from all. Phantom notes that disconnecting stops the app from reading your address and balances, but it does not revoke token approvals.
A token approval on Solana is a delegate set on one token account, allowing another address to move up to a set amount. At the time of writing, Phantom's help center points to a third-party revoker for Solana rather than a built-in screen. The SOLTidy delegation scanner also lists every account with an active delegate and revokes them, and it is free. A clean wallet usually has none.
A Phantom cleanup checklist#
Run through this in order; the first three are free inside Phantom.
- Hide what you do not want to see in Manage Tokens and Manage Collectibles.
- Report obvious scams as spam, and never visit their links.
- Burn unwanted regular NFTs from More and Burn Token; just hide compressed ones.
- Withdraw any inactive native stake.
- Close empty token accounts with the CLI or a closing tool, after a read-only scan to see how many you have.
- Disconnect old apps and check for token approvals.
Bottom line#
Phantom handles the display side of cleanup well: hiding, spam reporting and burning collectibles all live in its own menus. What it does not do, as documented at the time of writing, is close the empty token accounts that hold most of the stranded SOL, 0.00148844 to 0.00203928 SOL each. Hide and report spam in Phantom, burn regular NFTs there, withdraw inactive stake, and use the CLI or a closing tool for the accounts Phantom never shows you.
